Cristiano Ronaldo Wins FifPro World Player of the Year
By: Daryl | October 27th, 2008
Cristiano Ronaldo has been named FIFPro World Player of the Year 2007/8 by his fellow professionals. FIFPro is the Fédération Internationale Des Associations de Footballeurs Professionels – a big players’ union of 42 affiliated player’s associations. Every player in the organization (about 57,500 of them) involved has a vote, so this basically makes Ronaldo the worldwide player’s player of the year.
I’ve made this argument before, but… however you feel about C-Ron’s Oompa-Lumpa tan his form last season (42 goals etc) means I don’t see anyone else picking up individual awards this year. If C-Ron doesn’t win the FIFA World Player of the Year and the Ballon d’or then we’ll have an upset. Ronaldo’s more or less in the same position as Kaka was this time last year, where we’re just waiting for the awards to be handed to him.
Ruins the drama but no harm when we have a worthy winner. And next year it will probably be someone else.
Alongside a World Player of the Year there was also a FIFPro World XI selected by vote. Rob has that XI for us over on Champions League Offside, so head on over there to take a look. And spare a moment to wonder if the reason why there’s no left back in the World XI is because Ronaldo sold every possible candidate a stepover last season.

Hadn’t thought of that as the reason there’s no left back! Good call.

if the reason why there’s no left back in the World XI is because Ronaldo sold every possible candidate a stepover last season.
Which means it should be Patrice Evra’s by default.

Nice try Laurie! But Ronaldo probably went past Evra more than any other left back in the world last season in training.
