Crossbow Arrow Fired onto Pitch Halts Game

If coins and wayward footballs being thrown from the stands weren’t enough to make players in England consider wearing body armor while they play, the newest threat surely will. A Unibond First Division game between Woodley Sports and Alsager Town was abandoned this weekend after a two-foot steel arrow was fired into the Woodley stadium by an unknown archery hooligan. Alsager Town chairman Graham McGarry said after the match, “This was a serious incident and could have been a tragedy. It whistled past the left-back of Woodley Sports.”

The arrow was the only thing to get past the Woodley defense. The home team was leading 3-0 at the time of the attack. Alsager Town, by the way, are nicknamed the Bullets so Woodley Sports players would be well advised to invest in some bulletproof vests before the return leg.
