CSKA President: It is ok to Bribe other Teams’ Players
By: Bob | November 20th, 2006
Fresh off of his clubs Russia premier league title clinching victory this past weekend, CSKA President Yevgeny Giner has not only admitted to paying bonuses to other clubs so that they would play harder against his team’s main rivals, but he is also defending this murky move.
“I don’t see anything bad in it,” Giner was quoted as saying by the Sport-Express newspaper.
“Many people say that such thing is incorrect. I don’t think so. More than that, I could openly say how much would pay and also tell tax authorities where I get the money from.
“Someone might think that if CSKA paid money to a club, then next time that club would throw a game playing against us. But I don’t see anything wrong with that (giving bonuses to other clubs).”
Consider me one of those just a tad bit skeptical about the ethics of making payments to opposing teams’ players. I find it mind boggling that such a practice is not already banned outright by FIFA and UEFA. You’d have to be naïve to think that this sort of action doesn’t have an influence on how games turn out.
The fact that Giner runs the Russian premier league while also serving as a club president makes a sketchy situation in a sketch league seem even sketchier.
