English fans (most of them anyway) aren't calling for quotas on a race, they're calling for a minimum of three or four players on an English side being English. It's a tricky issue, and it's hard for me to see it as Black-and-White as you do. The anonymity of the internet allows you to call English fans racists, and that's the way things are, but I hope you realize that the issue is a bit more complicated than that. If I'm honest, I don't know where I stand on it. I think I'd be in favor of a small quota, a minimum of two or three English players on a squad. This isn't the same thing.

Also, are there no rights given to foreign spouses of English citizens? I would think that being married to an Englishwoman would grant the player at least residence, if not more.

While I am on the side of the player, I do find it interesting that an English person calls for his safety. After all, the typically "loving" and "inclusive" English fans have been calling for quotas on negroes and the such for such a long, long time now. And finally their gov't represented them and now they feel guilty. How 1800's white guilt of them.
