David Beckham Sells out Match that probably won’t happen
By: Bob | May 24th, 2007
When the clever marketing folks from the Harrisburg City Islanders announced on April 1 that they would be selling tickets for a US Open Cup match between their third division team and a David Beckham-led LA Galaxy squad even though the competition brackets weren’t out and the chances of the game happening were miniscule, it was easy to have a laugh at their expense.
It turns out that the club is having the last laugh. The City Islanders (are they celebrating their proximity to Three-Mile Island with that name?) announced today that they have sold 2,000 tickets at a $1 a piece for the contest that will probably never happen, making it an official sell out. If the game isn’t played the ticket proceeds will be donated to a local charity.
“Even though we realize that the match is still very unlikely, we are thrilled with the response.” said City Islanders General Manager Joe Sierko. “The seating capacity at our home field, Skyline Sports Complex, is 2,000 so the match is officially a sell out if we were to play it there. However, we will continue to sell up to 5,000 tickets as we also explore alternate venues that are capable of accommodating the anticipated crowd.”
I know that the US Open Cup is determined by a draw and I know that Beckham isn’t coming to the States until late July, but I think it should be arranged that the two teams meet in the competition. Very few people really care about the US Open Cup anyway. Give both of the teams passes into the quarterfinals on August 7 and make the Galaxy play in Harrisburg as a reward for a lower level team in the US actually finding a way to sell tickets. If enough teams can dupe the public into thinking that Beckham is playing attendance numbers are going to go through the roof.

I think tis is a great idea. I’d definitely buy tickets to a Harrisburg City Islanders vs. 1958 Brazil nonexistant match. Think how much trouble a long-dead Garrincha could cause on the wing against a shaky Islanders defense.

Maybe just maybe, they play on an island that is actually called City Island around here…same island the minor league baseball team Harrisburg Senators (Washington Nationals farm club) plays on..thier stadiums are right beside each other. So, before knocking someone do some research mate..
