David Beckham’s Milan Press Conference – Great Debut

By: Daryl | December 22nd, 2008

David Beckham was officially presented to the media in Milan before the rossoneri’s 5-1 win over Udinese on Saturday. Exciting stuff. Well, not really, as Becks just trotted out the same old cliches about it being “all about the football”. Although he did have me convinced when enthusing about always wanting to play alongside Kaka, Ronaldinho, Maldini etcetera.

No doubt about it, David Beckham bows to no one when it comes to giving a brand conscious, good-PR press conference. Great debut.

But of course, this all feels a bit odd – and not just because the advertising behind Beckham keeps moving.

No matter how much Beckham and/or Milan protest, this loan move obviously has a strong commercialism element. It’s not as if Milan saw Becks playing for Galaxy this year and thought “yes, what we need is an aging right midfielder.” Even at it’s purest, this is about re-invigorating the Beckham brand enough to get it back in an England shirt.

And any Milan fan who buys a #32 Beckham jersey to wear during Goldenballs short stay should keep the receipt (he’s only on loan, so the jerseys should be the same deal).

But in a transfer window likely to be short on excitement, this is at least… interesting, if only to see how Becks will do in this Milan team. Has he still got what it takes to perform in Serie A? We’ll find out soon enough.

I wouldn’t go that far. If you added Brazilian in there, it would be true for sure.

Speaking of which Alessio, seen Cafu signing for http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/dec/18/cafu-non-league-garforth

or at least nearly doing so.

I just can’t get over the amount of adverts that have bombarded me in the last 4 and a half minutes of youtube video, though it’s nice to see that despite travelling to Madrid, Los Angeles and now Milan, having played all over the World for England….Beckham while speaking still bores me more than any other man in football…other than Trever Brooking.
