DC United Signs with Volkswagen
By: Laurie | May 6th, 2008
The first thing I realized as I was writing this post was this: I did not know how to spell Volkswagen.
With an “e,” folks. You’ll need to remember this. Particularly if you’re a DC United fan.
Why? Because after weeks of rumors, Volkswagen has officially signed a five-year deal to be the logo on the DC United boys’ bellies.
The good news? I really like the logo. It’s not…rectangular. Like, say, that Best Buy thing. Or that Herbalife thing. Or any of the other things that look like they just slapped a bumper sticker on a jersey and called it good.
The bad news?
I can’t think of any. I like VW. I learned to drive in a VW. They’ve always had a kind of anti-status status. An anti-cool cool. If you’re cool enough to drive a VW, you’re cool enough to not care whether or not you’re cool.
Or something.
So go, DCU! Bring that money into MLS! And then maybe someday your developmental players like Ryan Cordeiro or Jeremy Barlow (both making $12,900 this year) will actually be able to afford one.
(Hat tip to Behind the Badge, the Official DCU blog. And also to Jon at our own DC United Offside, who scooped me by a full day on this.)
