Death, Taxes & Arjen Robben
By: chris | November 6th, 2008
Benjamin Franklin once said there are only two certainties in life, death and taxes. We’ll give Ben the benefit of the doubt because he was a couple centuries early, plus he did a couple other mildly intelligent things to pad his CV, but there are actually three certainties in life. So we can now amend it to: Death, taxes & Arjen Robben will get hurt.
The latest is a torn calf, which happened during, now sit down for this one, warmups before the Juventus game. I suppose this is a minor victory, because he made it through training unscathed, but I still think it’s about time Real sprung for a bubble for Mr. My Hairline Is Receding At Twice The Speed Of Sound.
Best part - or perhaps the good part, because Robben is a fantastically electric player when (snicker) healthy and a joy to watch - came two days beforehand when he announced Italian teams aren’t fond of playing against the likes of him:
“I like to play against Italian teams because they are not used to wingers and they do not like it. Against Roma last season I had one of my best games for Madrid and I hope to do well against Juve this week.”
Contrary to popular belief, or the belief system in Arjen’s head, Italians teams aren’t oblivious to these so called “wingers”. They’re an incredibly rare breed and worth a mint when found, but I think one or two have crossed Italian soil in the last, oh, century.
Still, even though Robben could is gifted enough to be one of the three or four best players in the world (getting dangerously close to becoming the new van Basten in the wrong way, however) and Italians don’t know wingers, I think they’ve come up with a foolproof plan to stopping Arjen: a stiff breeze.

At Chelsea he was nicknamed ‘glass ankles.’ And Jose once said he couldn’t believe how long it took Robben to recover from injuries.

Didn’t Roma beat Real Madrid last season? In both matches?

He was lightning in the first match and looked every bit the €36m player, but he was also going up against Marco Cassetti, Ludovic Giuly and a 78 year old CB on his side. Not exactly an impenetrable wall - particularly when his pace enters the equation.
