Defending That Yusuf Şimşek Viral

By: Daryl | May 29th, 2009

I spotted this viral video getting a hard time on both Off the Post and The Spoiler recently, and felt the need to stick up for it.

It’s true that whoever made it didn’t splash out for CGI, and clearly no one’s going to believe that Besiktas’ attacking mid Yusuf Şimşek can bend a goal post with his shots. But I think that’s sort of the point.

I like that they used some half-decent camerawork instead of fakey-fake computer imagery, and the idea of Şimşek bending a post one way and then trying to bend it back the other way with a second shot is actually pretty funny. So if I’m ever in Turkey and in need of a chocolate bar, I’m going Metro. But still, these viral thingies are no match for proper football ads.

The whole point of this commercial is to exaggerate the effects of the candy bar. Pretty similar to a Snickers (has to be Snickers) commercial where the guy would push the car down a hill after eating a Snickers bar.
