It's a challenge that endangers the safety of the opponent. If you can't make a safe challenge then you DON'T challenge. You can blame the referee but the Laws and his Training from FIFA camps tell him this is ALWAYS a Red Card. I don't know about the other incidents maybe he didn't see them ect, who knows. He got to the ball first because he went in dangerously, otherwise he'd be nowhere near it. The difference between Lamps and Gerrard's tackles is simple, Gerrard's was studs up but was on the ground, which is a legal tackle, worthy of a yellow if mistimed. When you leave your foot in like that, it's dangerous play. Strikers do it all the time against full-backs who are trying to clear the ball, and it's really dangerous. The other guy is kicking through the ball with all his might. If he kicks into another player's studs, it can easily break a bone in their foot. The craziest non-sending-off of the weekend was Shaun Wright-Phillips. There were TWO things he could have been sent off for - the initial challenge plus the kick-out after the foul - and ignoring the first lead to Delap getting a red.
