Didier Drogba Strikes Back
By: Daryl | November 13th, 2008
And not in a good way. Drogba scored a nice goal during Chelsea’s Carling Cup defeat at home to Burnley yesterday – his first of the season – but had a coin thrown at him by Burnley fans while celebrating.
Clearly Drogba doesn’t need the extra money, so he threw it back. Not clever Mr. Drogbacite. There are all kinds of reasons not to throw a coin at a crowd of people, but surely the main one is probability. The chances of Drogba actually hitting the yob who initially aimed the coin at him are pretty slim. We know DD’s got good aim, but it’s not that good.
Other reasons include the fact that the police will want to talk to you and you’ll probably get a three match ban.
To Drogba’s credit, he realized what a dumbass thing he’d done and apologized after the game:
“This is something I want to make clear. I tried to celebrate the goal and I received some things at me.
“The big mistake I did was to throw it back so if someone was hurt, I just want to apologise for it.
“This is not something I should show in a football match and I want to apologise.
“It was an incident in the heat of the moment and I regret it. It was just a mistake and nothing more.”
And in Drogba’s defence, I’d probably get angry and lash out if Burnely fans started throwing coins at me while I was at work. So though the focus is rightly on what Drogba did wrong and the inevitable punishment he’ll get, let’s hope the authorities don’t forget who started this and put some effort into identifying the initial coin-thrower.
