Didier Drogba Strikes Back

By: Daryl | November 13th, 2008

And not in a good way. Drogba scored a nice goal during Chelsea’s Carling Cup defeat at home to Burnley yesterday – his first of the season – but had a coin thrown at him by Burnley fans while celebrating.

Clearly Drogba doesn’t need the extra money, so he threw it back. Not clever Mr. Drogbacite. There are all kinds of reasons not to throw a coin at a crowd of people, but surely the main one is probability. The chances of Drogba actually hitting the yob who initially aimed the coin at him are pretty slim. We know DD’s got good aim, but it’s not that good.

Other reasons include the fact that the police will want to talk to you and you’ll probably get a three match ban.

To Drogba’s credit, he realized what a dumbass thing he’d done and apologized after the game:

“This is something I want to make clear. I tried to celebrate the goal and I received some things at me.

“The big mistake I did was to throw it back so if someone was hurt, I just want to apologise for it.

“This is not something I should show in a football match and I want to apologise.

“It was an incident in the heat of the moment and I regret it. It was just a mistake and nothing more.”

And in Drogba’s defence, I’d probably get angry and lash out if Burnely fans started throwing coins at me while I was at work. So though the focus is rightly on what Drogba did wrong and the inevitable punishment he’ll get, let’s hope the authorities don’t forget who started this and put some effort into identifying the initial coin-thrower.

First off, yeah its an idiotic thing for him to do – he’s not gonna get the person who threw it at him, and he could seriously hurt someone.

But it must be horrible having people chuck stuff at you while you play, and shouting various bits of abuse at him. This coin chucking thing really has to go away.

Also, due to a little thing called gravity, the chances of somebody getting seriously injured by a small object thrown up are much less than by that same object being thrown down. Not that this excuses anything, but I think three matches is excessive.

As much as I despise Chelsea, I hope he doesn’t receive a lengthy matchban. He realized his mistake and apologized for it. For some reason i think he was genuine about what he said and doesn’t deserve much of a punishment. I do hope they try to find out who threw the coin at him though.

He will get a min of three games. There is no excuse and although he apologised as soon as he could he realised his mistake.

Well Carragher got a three match ban and a £40,000 club fine for doing a similar thing back in 2002. So there is your marker.

Good old Drogba eh? Isn’t it nice to have him back fit and in the Chelsea side? Hmm maybe not. For me, his actions at the league cup game last night showed that he has no place in English football – no matter how talented a striker he is!

Its good to see Drougba playing again, its too bad about the coin. The fans shouldn’t have done that.

The fans are out of order. I would hate to be a footballer if all I get was abuse and objects thrown at me. How can anyone bring their families to games, when they know that other fans ruin the game.

Having said that, Drogba himself is a role model, and he knows he should never have thrown the coin. He should have pocketed it!! I hope the FA arent too harsh on him. And I hope they find the fans (more than one coin) throwing coins.
