Diego Scores a 62-Meter Wonder Goal

By: Bob | April 23rd, 2007

As we have seen time and time again, there is no better way to cap off a victory than to score a long-range wonder goal. The creator of wonder this time was Werder Bremen’s Diego who put the finishing touches on his team’s win in stoppage time against Aachen. The blast measured at 62.5 meters, which would have been only more impressive if he scored it with his head.

Wow, two intense lob goals this weekend. Check out this one from Toulouse's Emana against Rennes on Saturday.

I'm not sure I agree that the goal made no difference. Even in penalty time, 2-1 means you are one kick away from a draw. 3-1 means your game is over. But, again, good heads up play from Diego.

that shot wasn't only well taken, it was smart. The keeper was WAY too far out of goal.

No Ian, he wasnt taking the free kick, he was getting in the box trying to score off the freekick - same concept as pulling your goalie in hockey - youve got nothing to lose. That goal didnt make a difference.

So was the keeper taking the free kick? If not, he should have been farther back. After all, the game wasn't out of hand - it was 2-1. Still, great boot from that far away.

Diego is an absolutely fantastic player -- and this goal is genius. What a shot! I hope Bremen can hold on to him for a few more seasons so we can enjoy his creativity -- he's headed for bright things.
