Diego Staying at Bremen. Or Going to Madrid. We’re Not Sure.
By: Daryl | March 18th, 2008
Two conflicting stories coming out today. The first has Werder Bremen’s Braziliant playmaker Diego – who can do things like this in the acht und fünfzig minuten – brushing off all the recent transfer rumours and committing his future to the Bundesliga team, where he has a contract until 2011. “The decision lies with the club,” he told the Syker Kreiszeitung paper. “If Klaus Allofs and the president say that I stay, then I play on for Werder.”
Diego is also unhappy with the whole rumour mill thing – “Speculations and rumours are normal in the football business, which annoy me” – so he’ll have mixed feelings if he ever reads this here post. Because today’s other news is that Diego is off to Real Madrid this summer.
Diego’s agent/father told Marca that “Diego would definitely like to play for Real Madrid” and basically invited Madrid to make a move for his son. Speculation has the price tag somewhere around €30m.
Not really sure what to make of that, other than that the German newspaper wants Diego to stay in Germany and the pro-Madrid newspaper wants Diego to come to Real. There have also been rumours linking Diego with a move to Juventus, which I’d suggest would be a smarter move for the 23 year old as he could go there and still be the playmaker, still retain some of the central influence he enjoys at Bremen. As opposed to being just another big money player at Real.
Of course, all these stories could be true and Diego is basically thinking that if Werder accept an offer from Real or Juve then he’ll happily go, but if they reject the offers then he’ll happily stay. If I had his skills then I’d be happy too.

I think its quite obvious that Diego will play one more season at Werder before leaving for Real in 2009. He might leave earlier though if Werder doesnt qualify for nect years Champions League.
