Yelling at your players can be very effective because if the athletes in question have made it to the professional level, they are probably very competitive personalities, and competitive personalities will always respond well to being challenged.

Except Mourinho is 100% right about their scudettos.
But it all depends. Sometimes they need to be yelled at, sometimes sympathized with. It’s something that can only be decided on (and this is kind of funny since I just said the same exact thing in a completely unrelated post) player to play and game to game basis.

I think the best managers know when it will work and when it won't. I'm guessing in small doses, used to deflate enlarged egos, it's probably a good thing. But, as you said, for players already low on confidence, I doubt that it helps much. Although isn’t the answer to this thread “Yes, if they’re Obafemi Martins?” I was thinking that too! Funny how some posts stick in the mind forever.

You can argue as to whether Mourinho should or should have said what he said, but he was 100% right about the 3 scoudetto’s. Not one was worth anything.
This will be the first one they actually won, provided they don’t screw up…

I got called a Talentless Waster and a Fancy Dan before being dropped by my school football team. They never got to see if it worked.

All cos i dribbled round the keeper and celebrated my goal. Sheesh.
