Doing the Zidane in Japan

By: Bob | September 18th, 2006

Maybe Sepp Blatter was right after all about the need for a made-for-tv peace pipe smoking ceremony on Robben Island. The Zidane head butt move is starting to plague the sport. Witness the action in Japan where the original provactuer baits himself into a red card thanks to the fine acting of the head butt recipient. It is only a matter of time before we start seeing this in U-8 games. The end of civilization is nigh and we’ve got a front row seat…..

Nice work Zidane. Apologise and return the Golden Ball, enough is enough.

headbutts have been a part of the sport since day 1. Figo in the world cup got away with his. The notion that zidane somehow invented the headbutt in the sport just shows this site’s colossal ignorance about the commonality of violence in the game.

It seems people are very selective as to what is common in football.

Apparently headbutting someone in football has been part of the game for a long time but trash talking an opponent is something new. Heaven knows Zidane has never trash talked an opponent on the field. Apparently Materazzi invented it.

For God’s sake return the Golden Ball ZZ how many more hits can your reputation take. Be a man and Apologise.

    regards
    john

Lazaro, take a deep breath and relax :-) . It is all in good fun. Of course players head butted each other before. I read this post as being a joke against people who think Zidane has harmed society or something, which he obviously hasn’t.

    fair enuf Will, point taken

And OF COURSE trash talking is common in the sport – what a load of rubbish john! Who said it isn’t? It’s people like you john who are too dense to ask a basic question and think deeper than that famous headbutt. For 5 years Zizou played for juventus, one of the toughest clubs in the world, where insults, violence and gamesmanship are common. He heard this at every match. For ten years in France (at Cannes and Bordeaux), he heard insults on the pitch about his class and ethnic origins (and was also on the receiving end of plenty of vicious tackles and assults). And anyone who knows the Spanish league knows that it is routine for Spain’s top two clubs — Madrid & Barca — to be on the receiving end of insults and violent tackles by opposing players from other Spanish clubs. You john are incapable of asking the basic question: so what were the particular circumstances, what was the larger context of that particular match, that drove zizou to end his career that way upon hearing those particular words. But that would require a bit of thought on your part john. Sorry, my mistake.

Your gold….still attempting to defend the indefensible to the end. I’m pretty sure this wasn’t the first time ZZ has snapped in a game. As you said he’s played in the big leagues for some time and received and given back both physical and verbal abuse.

It’s so simple that it gets complicated for you. There is nothing to figure out, he was wrong and should have apologised immediately, and not just to “the children of the world” but Mat man himself.

The demonizing of Materazzi was absurd – were you a part of that? Imagine the audacity of Materazzi to say anything to ZZ especially about his sister. Be serious, no more crayons.

Join me in demanding the return of the Golden Ball. Also that he apologises on International TV for his cowardly act in the biggest moment in football, as the beloved game is watched by Billions of people.

    regards
    john

that was a brilliant piece of play-acting there. And john, no matter what you and other zidane-bashers will say, Golden Ball or not, NO ONE is going to forget what he achieved in his entire career up to that point of the World Cup final. never heard the saying ‘class is permanent’? in no way am i defending his actions, but you seem to be devoted to taking it to another level. you know he isn’t going to apologise and return the Golden Ball. and objectivity man. what about that? hard to think that you and other italian fans are going to even bat an eyelid if the victim had been cristiano ronaldo. zidane apologising to the public, yeah. zidane apologising to mat man? now, THAT’S gold. you don’t know how absurd that sounds. i suppose materazzi was the poor entirely blameless angel in the affair eh?

by the way, what do you mean ‘enough is enough’. the affair has been put to bed by now. it’s you and some other ignorant idiots who want to keep digging it up again and again. heck, you even dig it up 2 and a half months after the World Cup ended based on the 11-second clip you watched. please, just enjoy your World Cup win like any other fan and stop dragging up the past. i’m sure the azzuri would prefer that.
