Domenech Does Not Approve
By: Martha | December 14th, 2007
If you thought it was only everything about Italy that drove Raymond Domenech to do a bit of rabble rousing, think again. The France gaffer strongly believes the world wants to know his opinion on pretty much everything (I know I do), and he’s done us the favor of weighing on another matter of much import: The England managerial position.
According to RayRay, the almost-done appointment of Fabio Capello is a terrible idea, but not — well, not entirely, anyway — because he’s Italian. The problem, you see, is that he’s not English and, from his throne over in France, Domenech is very into the “an Englishman for England” thing. Not because there are necessarily any who could do the job well, but just because, you know, they’re English. And, while it’s true that the appointment of a foreigner to coach the national team is inherently a judgment of the readiness of anyone at home for the job, the point is winning, not being nice to Harry Redknapp. It’s nice that Domenech is there to be more nationalistic than virtually any commentator’s in England, though. I suppose that’s something.
(Also upset about Capello’s appointment is his mother, but I suppose she’s got more of a leg to stand on that RayRay. Anyway, she’s just worried about her boy, not hating on him.)
