Drawing four names out of a pot is confusing in Scotland
By: Bob | November 1st, 2007
It seemed like a brilliant idea at the time. Hold the draw for the semifinals of the CIS Scottish Insurance Cup at the Parliament building to attract attention to a competition that often gets lost in the shuffle. Heck, why not have an honest to member of Parliament pick the names of the four remaining teams out of the pot to show the government’s support for the sport? What could possibly go wrong?
From STV:
The numbers are based on seedings from last season, meaning Rangers are one, Aberdeen two, Hearts three and Dundee United four.
So when number two was drawn first, the Presiding officer said Hearts when he should have said Aberdeen. That means the first pairing should have read Aberdeen v Dundee United.
Not realising the confusion the second tie was therefore drawn as Aberdeen v Rangers. When it should have been Hearts v Rangers.
What is believed to have gone wrong was that the Presiding Officer had the numbers written down on his sheet.
Yeah, yeah. The wrong numbers were on the sheet. Wasn’t that the same excuse used to start the First War of Scottish Independence back in 1296? These politicians never learn.
The draw, by the way, has now been corrected with Aberdeen playing Dundee United and Rangers versus Hearts with the already eliminated Celtic and Hibs hoping the same politician will pull their names out of the pot for the final.
