Dutch Fans Are Mean. Funny, But Mean.
By: chris | February 26th, 2009
That’s FC Volendam goalkeeper Jeroen Verhoeven. He is, to put it nicely, plump. Quite plump. In fact he might just be the only player in the Eredivisie over 100kg, and he’s almost certainly the only footballer in a European top flight who makes Andy Reid look svelte.
So when bottom – very bottom – Volendam traveled to Amsterdam this weekend, Ajax fans had a clever chant waiting for him.
His portly status has found him the target of a few fandoms and the pizza chant has become a staple at Volendam away games. So if you’re watching a Dutch football game and here a loud chorus of “pizza” ring out, no need to check the teamsheet to see who’s in net.
And as well as being plump, Jeroen also doesn’t seem to be very good. Not only have Volendam conceded a positively insane – even by Eredivisie standards – 60 goals already, but according to ESPN he’s played in every single game and is yet to make a single save. That’s some talent right there.
Oh, but ESPN lists him as “99kg”. Isn’t that sweet of them.

I was watching highlights recently of Volendam vs PSV, and I thought something was wrong, like all their keepers were ill or suspended or something. Dude is straight up fat.
In fairness tho, he did make a save or two from what I remember.

I don’t know if I’d call the brother “Andy Reid” fat. That’s harsh. He’s certainly fat for a footballer, but probably more “tubby” if he was just a regular guy.
