Earthquake Technology Could Prevent Metatarsal Maladies

It seems that the number of top football players that have come down with metatarsal fractures has increased over the past few years, but researches are working on creating a device that might help prevent metatarsal maladies in the future.
Using the same sound detection technology that seismologists use to measure earthquakes, researches have developed a device that can monitor tiny cracks in bones that over time can develop into stress fractures like the one Wayne Rooney suffered before the start of this year’s World Cup.
“The goal is to create a wearable device that would alert the person when a stress fracture was imminent so that they could stop rigorous physical activity long enough for the bone to heal,” said Ozan Akkus, an associate professor in Purdue’s Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering.
Amazing what people can come up with these days. If this thing works, you can bet there will be a number of teams rushing out to buy it just so their players can predict when there will be an earthquake. Now if they could only invent a device that can alert a player when he should retire or one that tells a coach it is time to quit!
