Ebbsfleet United ‘Til I Die

By: Bob | November 13th, 2007

eufclogo.jpgWhat a beautiful world we live in. Last night I went to bed a man who barely owns a pair of socks that match and with no knowledge of the Ebbsfleet United soccer club. Today, I own the club. Tomorrow I will have a list of players that they will need to acquire and a formation that will guarantee that they will rise from the lowly depths of Conference football to the English Premier League in no time.

Oh wait, it doesn’t quite work that way. Damn. It turns out that I’m not the only one to put £35 into the pot to purchase a club. There are 19,999 other My Football Club people who now also own 51-percent of Ebbsfleet United. I wonder how many of them were like me today, scrambling to find out information about our new toy.

Actually, I know the answer to that. A lot. The club’s official Web site has been taken down by too much traffic. An Internet-owned team’s Web site not working. We’re off to a great start already!

Wikipedia to the rescue.

What kind of owner will I be? If you are one of my 19,999 new colleagues you’ll probably love me because I am not going to get in the way of your fantasy football fun. I could pretend to know about players at the Conference level in England and I could voice my thoughts on what the club needs to do to win, but I won’t. My interest in this project had nothing to do with actually having a say in how a football club is run. I simply thought it was an interesting experiment.

Purchasing the club has been the easy part. Running it with so many voices involved will be an entirely different challenge. One that I think I will sit back and watch while wearing my new Ebbsfleet United kit, assuming they even sell kits online. Win or lose this should be interesting.

I only wonder what the people who grew up supporting Ebbsfleet United think about having people like me owning their team.

  • To all you co-owners of Ebbsfleet Utd, through My Football Club, Ebbsfleet reached the Final of the FA Trophy to be played at Wembley after beating Aldershot Town 4-2 on agg yesterday. Yesterday's game at The Rec ended 1-1.

Here in the New York Area, everybody is all excited about my recent promotion to club owner....This is the biggest thing to happen in the US since the formation of the Cosmos...... Do you think the Ebbsfleet Boys will be doing a summer tour of the states
  • As another co-owner, I'd like to point out that the only people posting here are my fellow co-owners. Still, I'm excited by the prospect, and hope we can slowly turn any angry Ebbsfleet supporters to our side by not tumbling down the table.

Now we need to find out who's selling the kits...

As a co-owner, I move that not only is the wearing of the Ebbsfleet kit be permitted in the director's box, it is mandatory. Oh, and expand the director's box to the entire stadium.

Oh, and order 20,000 replica kits.

    That is all.

This is a hugely interesting experiment and I am thrilled to be part of it.
I am well aware that My FC may not be able to satisfy its dreams and could end up walking away from the club, but that is no different to Chelsea and Roman Abramovich.
If it works out then great if it doesn’t then the club will have benefited form all of the extra resource and attention generated by this experiment.
To try because it might not work would be unforgivable and definitely not the attitude taken by anyone who has achieved anything of note.
I like many others will by my replica kit, attend home games and positively contribute in any way I can, so ignore the nay sayers and join me on the road to greatness. Go Fleet!!!

As a fellow Ebbsfleet owner, I support the notion of paying steeply for an over-the-hill, past-prime forward, but also the notion of owning a big yacht.

Also, I think we can get Beckham in during the transfer window. We can help him pitch his new underwear.

Add me to the list of Fleet owners/Offside readers.

When does Ebbsfleet United get its own blog?

I wonder how many Ebbsfleet co-owners we have on this site. I kind of wish they would have kept the old club name, but that's just my weird affinity for ridiculously long club names like Gravesend and Northfleet Football Club. I'm just glad we have a club. GO FLEET.
  • Bob, as co-owners of Ebbsfleet, I vote we immediatley bring in an Director of Football with questionable credentials, sign a massivley over-priced Eastern European striker, become governor of a remote Siberian province, divorce our wives and purchase the biggest yacht on earth.

Then we would fit in, right?
