Eddie Johnson Goes to Fulham
By: Laurie | January 23rd, 2008
American ex-pat party at Fulham!
Newest player to be invited? Striker Eddie Johnson, late of the KC Wizards.
Eddie became the most recent American to go abroad when he officially signed for Fulham and had his appeal for a work permit granted. (Or he’s probably the most recent. MLS players are currently disappearing faster than supermodels at a David Copperfield show. Among others, Houston’s Joseph Ngwenya is apparently heading to SK Austria, and Chivas keeper Brad Guzan may be going to Celtic.)
Fulham is apparently a great place to work if you’re an American. (Kasey Keller, Carlos Bocanegra, Brian McBride and Clint Dempsey are currently on the roster.) Or it’s a great place to work as long as you don’t get hung up on that whole winning thing. They’re currently in the relegation zone, sitting nineteenth out of twenty EPL teams after having taken only 15 points in 23 matches.
On the other hand, though, they’re one of the few EPL teams currently interested in taking on American players to do things besides stand in goal. And according to Soccer by Ives, the team is willing to spend the money to invest for the future. So even if they do get relegated, the plan is to build up and be back within a year.
Johnson made $875,000 last year for the Wizards. I’d be curious to see what he brings in at Fulham.

It would be really hard to improve yourself as a player at a club that loses almost every game. Johnson could do so much better.

“Fulham is apparently a great place to work if you’re an American.”
Thank you for supporting the fact that Americans can’t play proper football.

I don’t think that’s what I said. Sure, Fulham will be relegated. But it’s not like they’re a pub side. Are you saying Championship level is not proper football?
