El Clasico Still Only The Second Best Derby Of The Weekend

By: chris | November 30th, 2009

While the world was hanging one the every movement of El Clasico this weekend there was, incredibly, an even bigger derby taking place. While it may not have the financial backing of the Spanish giants and thus the quality or global scope, it has more. Somehow, it has more. A bit more passion, a bit more fire, often literally, a bit more…je ne sais quoi. Watching the Spaniards one can get lost in the game, but here, one must have one eye on the pitch and one in the stands.

Of course no one will accuse the teams of having the quality of Barcelona or Madrid, and that’s partly the point. Part of what makes El Clasico so special is that the teams are so good and from that a rivalry was born.

But in Belgrade, they simply despise the other’s soul.

Last year, Red Star lost the away derby to Partizan and proceeded to show their good sportsmanship by setting Stadion Partizana on fire. Saturday, Partizan returned the favor at the Marakana.

And then they beat Red Star simply to rub a little salt in the wound.

A game was also played. It, much like the happenings in the stands, was not lacking for action.

  • What's with all the derbies this weekend? Strange.
  • The Greek version of El Classico between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos was better.

A lot of interesting notes from that match, including Djibrill Cisse's premiere in the biggest Greek derby. He was frustrated all night long, kept off the scoresheet, and Olympiacos won 2-0 :P

Also Sebastian Leto, the most recent traitor in Greek football, played against Olympiacos yesterday for the first time since making the trek across the Athenian divide and joining Panathinaikos after spening a one-year loan stint with Olympiacos -- it's fair to say he won't be returning anytime soon.

Also for the first time ever, the Greek derby was broadcasted online via an HD stream. It has been streamed through public broadcasting channels before, but never in HD quality. Hopefully it's not the last time that happens.

PS. I agree with Alessio's comments concerning the Genoa match. Excellent display of derby football.

A bit more passion, a bit more fire....a bit more murder. Ask the family of Brice Taton. Ask Toulouse FC.

    Scum.
