Elephant Soccer: Several Tons of Something

By: Bob | October 26th, 2007

This week’s addition to the odd soccer sports collection comes from Thailand where elephants are so revered that they are trained to play the soccer and to knock over goalkeepers with their powerful shots. The all-time best elephant soccer match took place a few years back when a team of pachyderms played to a 5-5 draw with a team of prisoners. Alas, there were no prisoner pancakes. “We train the elephants every day to play soccer, kick the ball, and to keep from stepping on the other people,” said Pattarapon Meepan, 19, whose father owns the Elephant Palace. “They are not the best players because they are quite slow,” he said. “But they try their best. These elephants can do everything.”
