ESPN Soccernet Thinks Inter Would Struggle in the English Championship

By: Daryl | March 17th, 2009

We all make mistakes of course. And computers can be tricky things. So we’re not saying ESPN Soccernet are incompetent or anything. But this screw up from their Serie A page is chucklesome enough to be worth sharing.

It’s been corrected now of course. But for a while there Inter had dropped to third in Serie A, two points behind second place Wolves and a full nine points behind leaders Crystal Palace.

Wolves and Palace had played 46 games to Inter’s 28 of course, but they say points in the bag are worth more than games in hand. Even if you have 18 games in hand. Here’s the complete screenshot (click to enlarge)

Big big thanks to eagle eyed Offside reader Mustafa, who was kind enough to take the screenshot last night and send it to us. (If you see something worth sharing, don’t be shy. Send it to tips[at]theoffside[dot]com).

After spending longer than I care to admit randomly Googling for stats, I can semi-confidently confirm that this isn’t just a geographic Serie A and Championship jumble. There’s also a hole in the time space continuum. Because it’s actually the current 2008/9 Serie A table, mixed in with the final 2005/6 Championship table.

And no, Crystal Palace didn’t win the Championship that season. They finished sixth behind Reading, Sheff Utd, Watford, Preston and Leeds. Which means Soccernet actually have Inter in eighth. Not even good enough to qualify for the UEFA Cup. Mourinho will definitely be getting fired if Moratti sees this, right?

it would be cool if they could do a comparison of the different leagues and their respective points, like maybe the top 15 clubs from england, spain and italy.
it would look kind of like this,

    Barcelona 66
    Inter Milan 66
    Manchester Utd. 65
    Chelsea 61
    Liverpool 61
    Real Madrid 60
    Juventus FC 59

although we would have to wait until the season was over b/c they all have all played different amounts of games.

Yes Weston, one of the most annoying things with the EPL schedule is the almost perpetual “games in hand” business.

And this is ESPN, hating Mustafa (finder of the table), Daryl (poster of the table), and while they’re at it, the creator of the “print screen” function.

    I love the internets!

Er, I think you will see that this also found its way to the Inter board last night.

Luton Town finishing seventh in Serie A is probably the most impressive. At this moment they are twelve points from safety in League Two, very close to being sent to the Football Conference.
