Euro 2008 on World Cup Blog
By: Daryl | March 24th, 2008
You may already know this, but we now have a site over on World Cup Blog dedicated to Euro 2008. When the tournament kicks off in June, all our attention (and we’re hoping a good chunk of yours) will be focused there. We have team blogs for all 16 teams, and will be covering events from Austria and Switzerland in a manner bordering on the obsessive.
As the tournament builds up we’ll have an eye on everything from beer bottles with custom team flags to debates over squad selection.
So this week, with all the Euro 2008 teams in action, you can catch all the news and views around Wednesday’s friendlies at Euro 2008 on WCB. Also Chris will be covering arguably the most exciting of all those friendlies with a LiveBlog of Spain vs Italy on Italy WCB. No prizes for guessing who he’s supporting though.

Actually, I’ll be supporting Spain for a 27-0 rout so that Donadoni gets canned first thing Thursday morning and Lippi gets ridden in to save the day on a parade float.

I can’t believe France-England isn’t going to be liveblogged. Surely…?

Spain - Italy is twice as important given the fact that both teams are participating in Swissaustria. Plus Laurie’s on vacation. Plus we’re trying to make Beckham go away. Fight the power.

Oh right, Laurie is on vacation. Too bad. But there is another France blogger now. Maybe he might be interested.
And Spain-Italy is twice as important? That news to me. France-England is equally important though for different reasons, especially for the English and French, and they have quite a few fans.
France will be in the Euros, and this is a good chance to see what Domenech can do with a reshuffled squad, missing some match winning players like Henry and Benzema, but with a recalled Trezeguet. With all the media focus on the relationship between the two, this might be Trezeguet’s only chance to prove that he has a place on the squad before the Euros, and how he does will either condemn or prove Domenech’s decisions regarding him. This is also a huge, huge test for England, with many people are wondering what they can do with a new manager against a world class team (France is no Switzerland or Croatia), if the players can rise to the occasion, away from home, or once again disappear into mediocrity. This game might be Beckham’s only chance to prove himself too, since Capello might make his 100th cap his last one.

Also, France vs. England is really like David Unwanted vs. David Unwanted. The chance to see these two guys shine - or fail - in what could be there last chance. Delicious. Raul and Del Piero? No one really cares outside of Madrid and Juventus.
Plus Domenech vs. Capello is always going to be fun (Domemech criticized England for having a foreign boss).

Not to spam, but I have to clarify one thing before Chris gets on my case - when I said “Raul and Del Piero? No one really cares outside of Madrid and Juventus,” what I meant was among French and English fans, who besides the ones who support Juve and Madrid, don’t care about those two guys.

No one cares about Domenech or his squad outside of France. Nor does anyone care about Trezeguet - not even in Torino. Actually, both are whiny, divisive figures only fans of the teams typically want any association with. And most people would just like England to take its seat on the pine until the Euros are over.
I don’t even get how this is an argument.
(Raul and Del Piero aren’t playing. Torres v Toni, or something.)

Umm, what I said was that France and England is especially important to their own fans - I didn’t mention anyone else. You said Spain vs. Italy was twice as important, which it isn’t other than to their own fans. Spain and Italy don’t generate any more interest outside their own fanbase than France vs. England.

I’m going to have to agree with chris here…to the neutral fan Spain vs. Italy is much more appealing than France vs. England
France is a great team to watch, but England?…not so much
Both Spain and Italy are great teams to watch, so I can see how chris says that match is twice as important
And I’m a Portugal fan, so I despise both Spain and Italy, but I’m sure it’ll be more interesting to watch than long-ball England try to mix it up with Les Bleus

For me, Spain and Italy will be the more appealing match for pure football quality, while France and Italy is the one I have more invested in, as I love to see England lose and care nothing one way or the other for Spain and Italy. Wednesday’s got some great matchups, and I’d rather watch Egypt-Argentina than either of these.

Is no one else excited to see Van Persie return to the Dutch side. It should be a welcome addition to what appears to be an offence that is ready to explode…if only Ruud were there too
