Everton Launch New Kit With “The Scouse Haka”
By: Daryl | August 7th, 2009In a move that 101GG are calling “The Scouse Haka”, Everton launched their new black and pink away kit by hiring six Maori men to perform a Haka version of the Everton song “If You Know Your History”. Full lyrics after the jump:
It’s a Grand Old Team to play for,
And it’s a Grand Old team to support,
And if you know your history,
It’s enough to make your heart go woooooah………..,
We don’t care what the Reds’ fans say,
What the heck should we care,
Because we only know,
That if there’s gonna be a show,
Then the Everton boys will be there.
Everton, Everton, Everton, Everton,Everton.
If you can ignore the slightly bizarre commercialization of the Haka, then I guess this is just a bit of fun, and at least shows a sense of humour lacking in certain other kit launches.
But here’s what the Haka looks like when performed for real, by the New Zealand rugby team.

They’re going to need to remember those tough guys when they step out onto an away pitch for the first time wearing a pink kit. Home fans will have a field day.
it’s also hard for me to get past the commercialization of the Haka. How did that even come about? I wonder how Cahill feels about it.

Cahill is an Australian, the Haka is a New Zealand ritual. It won’t phase him in the slightest

I realise Cahill is an Aussie, as am I. Just curious if he’s wondering WTF they went with New Zealanders for. Sorry for the confusion, Ash.
