Everton on the Move

Everton Kirkby Stadium

Everton’s plan to leave Goodison Park and build a new stadium in Kirkby is causing all sorts of trouble. The plan looks set to go ahead after the club polled supporters, who voted 59% in favour of the move. A majority yes, but not exactly a landslide. It still leaves a good number of very vocal fans who aren’t so keen. So despite doing what looks like a decent thing and seeking supporters opinions, Everton are now in the unenviable position of knowing they’re going to upset someone whatever they do.

It’s easy to understand the YES voting fans desire for a shiny new 50,000 seater stadium, especially as this seems to be a new era of football with plenty of clubs replacing ageing infrastructure (Goodison Park was originally built in 1892.) It also seems that since Knowsley Council in Kirkby will donate the land, and Tesco will provide construction, the stadium won’t cost Everton all that much.

But it’s equally easy to understand the opposing NO argument. The biggest concern is that the new stadium will mean a change in post code for Everton FC, taking the club out of the city of Liverpool and into Kirkby. Not a great distance (about three miles) but symbolically significant. This editorial from Everton site Tofeeweb seems to sum up the feeling.

Yea it's sad that so many clubs are leaving their old stadiums for new ones. These stadiums are part of the club's history, and it's sad that in the space of a couple of months they can be destroyed and new apartment complexes can be built. Sad but true. This though, should motivate us fans even more to spend time at our club's stadium before it gets torn down.
