Failed Drug Test is a Hairy Situation for Stan Lazaridis
By: Bob | March 14th, 2007
It is getting tough for football players not to fail a drug test. If you aren’t getting busted for treating your girlfriend’s gift that keeps on giving you are getting in trouble for battling the scourge known as an itchy scalp. Perth Glory and former Australia international Stan Lazaridis is facing a two-year ban after he tested positive for a banned substance, a substance he says he was using to make his head less itchy.
From Adelaide Now:
Lazaridis, a member of the 2006 World Cup squad, has been fighting the agonising scalp condition which has forced him to take a drug on an anti-doping black list.
He took the antiandrogen finasteride, which was prescribed by his practitioner, when the itching of his scalp – a symptom of alopecia – became unbearable.
Finasteride contains a prohibited substance under the World Anti-Doping Authority Code as it may act as a masking agent for other substances, although not at levels to which Lazaridis was prescribed or tested.
There are drugs to treat an itchy head and they help to beat company-mandated drug tests? I’m off to the pharmacist. See you in a bit….
