Fan for a Match: Adelaide United
By: Bob | August 31st, 2006
This week’s Fan for a Match selection takes us to the mysterious land of Australian soccer where the big news today is that Dwight Yorke has left Sydney FC for the greener pastures of Sunderland. Yes, the same Sunderland which is being managed by Yorke’s old teammate Roy Keane. Small world.
Sydney FC won the A-League Grand Final last year, but the team we are backing this week finished first during the regular season. They have also already captured the pre-season cup this season, they have a striker from China and a midfielder from Brazil and therefore have to be one of the top contenders for the league title again, despite a disappointing loss to arch-rival Melbourne Victory FC in the season opener last weekend.
Our team, Adelaide United, is playing on the road on Saturday and what a road trip it will be. The lads fly all the way to New Zealand to take on the much despised and rather lowly New Zealand Knights FC. Why there is a team from New Zealand playing in Australia’s top league is beyond us, but we have no doubt that with the collective support of The Offside audience we can lead Adelaide United to a glorious victory over those Kiwi eaters and on a path towards another league title.
Thanks to blog reader Andrew for this week’s nomination. If you’d like your team to be selected for Fan for a Match, shoot us an email bob [at] theoffside.com. There will be no prize if your team is chosen and we can’t guarantee victory, but the thrill alone will leave you feeling better than Dwight Yorke at a nightclub at four in the morning.
