Fan for a Match: Brujas FC
By: Bob | October 5th, 2006
The Fan for a Match juju hasn’t been too good around these parts, but last week the demons were finally exercised when my guys from South Africa came through with a huge last minute win. Now that the losing ghosts have been cleared from the air, it is time to start a little winning streak.
This week’s winners come from the lovely county of Costa Rica. I’m throwing my full support behind Brujas FC. The team currently sits in third place in the Primera Division and will be at home to face last place Santacrucena this weekend. This one almost seems as easy as a second division game in Scotland to pick and so I know I’m setting myself up for disappointment here.
The selection of Brujas FC was a fairly easy one once I learned that Brujas is translated to mean “witches.” I also liked the brief, yet colorful description of the club in Wikipedia:
The team was heavily criticized in 2004, due to certain economical aspects. While the owners and associates of the club would sit in luxury accommodations with exotic and gourmet food, many of the soccer players were underpaid or weren’t provided the appropriate equipment according to some part of the sport press. For 2005, the team signed the best coach from the 2004 tournament and changed their stadium to the National Stadium, and have not had any economic problems so far, even with such players as Adrain De Lemos, William Sunsing, John Mario Culman, Berny Peña, and others.
I won’t be sitting in a luxury box nor will I eat exotic and gourmet food when I cheer them on this weekend. A full report, or as much of a report as I can string together with my limited Spanish skills, will be posted on Monday.
