Fan for a Match: Nac Breda
By: Bob | August 24th, 2006
We once had a coach who told us that you always want to be cocky smart and not cocky stupid. We could never quite figure out what that meant, but it seems appropriate this week as we are feeling very cocky. Why shouldn’t we be? We helped a second division Bundesliga team to victory last week and our Fan for a Match invincible powers cannot be stopped.
We’re going to need those powers to be in full force this weekend. We’ve selected the Dutch Eredivisie team Nac Breda as the squad we will support for one match, and one match only. Nac Breda currently is in a nine-way tie for last place in the league after one week of play. The lads got off to what can only be described as a brutal start to their season getting pummeled 8-1 by AZ Alkmaar.
If that weren’t bad enough, Nac Breda will be facing traditional Dutch power Ajax on Sunday. This is an Ajax team that was eliminated in Champions League qualifying yesterday and they will be looking to take out their displeasure on a weaker opponent. Little does Ajax know that The Offside will be the 12th man in this match and we will not be denied.
So who is Nac Breda (besides being a terrible team)? Wikipedia has a good background on the club. We especially like this part:
NAC (NOAD ADVENDO Combinatie) was founded on September 19, 1912 when the two clubs NOAD and ADVENDO merged. NOAD stood for Nooit Opgeven Altijd Doorzetten (English: Never give up, always go persevere). ADVENDO stood for Aangenaam Door Vermaak En Nuttig Door Ontspanning (English: Pleasant for its entertainment and useful for its relaxation), possibly the longest football club name in the world.
There you have it. We are supporting “never give up, always go persevere pleasant for its entertainment and useful for its relaxation”.
That makes us feel both cocky smart and cocky stupid.
If you’d like us to support you team for a match, shoot an email to bob [at] theoffside.com. Fan for a Match teams are selected every Thursday with the results recapped on Monday.
