Fans Choose some Odd Ways to Show their Displeasure

soccerprotest.jpgFor those of you who were looking forward to seeing a replay of the World Cup final between Italy and France so that the real winner can be determined, a French judge today threw out a lawsuit brought forth by a pair of French fan groups who were seeking justice over the whole le affair head butt. Not only did the judge smack down the claims by the groups like he was issuing his own head butt, but he also ordered them to pay the legal bills for the French Football Association and FIFA, who were forced to waste their precious legal time on such a silly matter when they could have been protecting one of their own or chastising certain Web sites.

While the French fans went the legal route, a football fan in Ireland decided to voice his displeasure in an entirely different way. The fan in question was just a wee bit upset about the exclusion of his club, Dundalk, from the newly formed Eircom League Premiership so he took to the Ireland football association’s offices and threatened to light himself and everything around him on fire. This very well could have been the most interesting thing to happen in Irish football in years, but he was talked out of it. We can always hold out hope that he pulls off the stunt at halftime of one of the matches in the future.

Meanwhile, a plane flying from Milan to Athens was forced to make an emergency landing Friday because a fight broke out between Greek fans returning home from the Paris Saint-Germain and Panathinaikos UEFA Cup match. Police say the fans appeared to be drunk – what a shock! It takes real effort to even get a buzz from those tiny airplane bottles of booze.

Finally there was a bit of a fracas this week during training at Norwich City. A fan showed up at the club’s practice and demanded that he be given a trial. The players and coaches thought it was a joke. The fan did not. That’s when the trouble began.

Norwich City spokesman Joe Ferrari said: “Someone did come to the training ground and ask for a trial and when that was declined he became difficult and consequently the police had to be called and the man was escorted from the premises.

“The club is happy to let fans come along and watch the players train, but obviously in this case the situation reached a point where it was necessary to call the police.”

The police didn’t identify the fan but it wouldn’t be a surprise if he was an out of work striker who still harbors notions that he is the best in England.
