Fashion Faux Pas: Champions League Kits Gone Awry

By: chris | September 17th, 2008

If the day-glo yellow didn’t work for Chelsea, it was never going to work for Lyon – even in a less blinding hue. Though a bit of credit is due, because they have improved since their Native American motif of the mid-90’s. (Exceptionally hideous picture of Ludovic Giuly wearing the XXXL edition and looking ready for flight after the jump.) And in fairness, they weren’t the only ones to rock the crossing guard tribute, as Fenerbahce were a guilty as well.

I’m thinking corneas might actually fear those.

Then there’s Arsenal, who have something of a debatable CL kit going on right now. It’s not utterly horrendous, some may even like it, but the color combo is strange – particularly the yellow, a running theme here – and it looks like a retro track jacket you’d find at Old Navy. Not exactly haute couture.

The referee seems to agree, punishing Bakary Sagna for his offense. Or maybe he’s just showing him what hue the yellow should be.

And the evidence that Lyon is progressing, albeit slowly.

Wow. First the Lyon honor post and now this. Be honest with me… are these posts some ploy to exploit the France-Italy animosity and get some comments going?

Honestly? Hadn’t even thought about it. Arsenal was the first kit I noticed.

    I don’t know what’s worse; Arsenal’s kit, or Sagna’s hair.

You seem to be missing the point on the Arsenal kit…(A) the club’s traditional away color is yellow, and (B) the kit itself is a tribute to the 1989 league winning team, hence the retro look…

As has been noted independently on a number of the game threads, the real sartorial crime in this year’s competition is the perpetuation of the idiotic Champions League rule that requires large single colour squares behind each player’s number, which has resulted in the ruination of half the kits in the group stages (with Barcelona and Celtic being particular victims).

A slightly less annoying, while still deplorable, tic is the re-appearance of the all lower case player names (see Villarreal, Arsenal, etc.). And special mention to Steaua Bucharest who somehow have managed to get a different shade of red on the back on their shirts from that on the front.
