Father vs Son in the Championship Next Season

Sheringham ColchesterRemember how Arnor Gudjohnsen’s greatest wish was to play alongside his son Eidur? (Click the link if you don’t.) Well, Teddy Sheringham is way more competitive than that. The 41 year old former Manchester United treble winner and Tottenham legend left West Ham recently and signed for Championship battlers Colchester United. His ambition – as well as scoring plenty for The Us – is to play against his 19 year old son Charlie Sheringham.

Charlie is on the books of Crystal Palace, but currently on loan to their USA franchise Crystal Palace Baltimore. If he does enough to impress this summer, he may be back at Palace in time to face his old man. Colchester host Palace on November 24th 2007 and Palace will return the hospitality on March 8th 2008.

Charlie’s inexperience coupled with Teddy’s advancing years means they’ll need a little luck to meet on the field. Charlie needs to earn a spot on the first team and Teddy’s aging limbs can’t play every game of a grueling 46 game Championship season. The guy’s been playing so long, his football career is actually five months older than Charlie. But only a fool would bet against Teddy Sheringham.
