FC Brussels Suspends its Own Player for Vicious Foul
By: Bob | October 23rd, 2006
It is hard to imagine too many clubs that would willingly and proactively suspend one of their players for a dangerous tackle before a league takes action, but that is exactly what the Belgian side FC Brussels has done following one their defenders career-threatening foul on an opponent on Sunday.
Sierra Leone international Sydney Kargbo has been suspended by the club until December 31 because of the smackdown he laid on Kortrijk’s Jimmy Hempte during FC Brussels’ 3-1 loss in the Belgian Cup.
“I’m happy Hepte survived the horrible attack,” Brussels chairman Johan Veremeersch said. “I want to use his suspension as an example. This should not happen on a soccer pitch.”
Those are certainly refreshing words to read. Let’s hope that Belgium can also lead the way in fan behavior.
