Feel the Excitement. The 2007 RoboCup is Almost Here

By: Bob | June 27th, 2007

These are exciting times for the legions of fans that follow the tradition-rich sport of robotic soccer. The 11th edition of the RoboCup will kick off this weekend in Atlanta, Georgia with nearly 300 teams from 33 countries competing for the right to be called the ultimate nerd. The ultimate prize, however, is to make human soccer players obsolete by 2050.

According to the organizers:

By mid-21st century, a team of fully autonomous humanoid robot soccer players shall win the soccer game, comply with the official rule of the FIFA, against the winner of the most recent World Cup.

If I live long enough to see that day please shoot me because watching a team with 11 Peter Crouches on it sounds like a nightmare. Watching the final go to penalty shots and a robot making a nifty save at the end, well, that is almost exciting. But not really. I’m with John Stewart on this one.

That goalie laying down in front of the goal trick was dirty. It reminded me of my time as keeper in my Sunday league, only humans can chip, which is the biggest reason we're still better than robots.
