FIFA to test out Goalmouth Referees at Club World Cup
By: Bob | October 9th, 2007Good news for referees hanging out on the unemployment line and for those of you who enjoy watching videos of referees getting clocked by balls and players. FIFA has announced that it will experiment by adding two additional referees each match at the Club World Cup in January. The exact role that the referees will play remains to be seen, but evidently they will stand around the goalmouth and try not to score game winning goals. At the same time, the tournament will also be a test for computer chip goal-line technology. With all the extra human and computer eyes watching the goals, the tournament will probably end up featuring nothing but nil-nil draws.

Should be an interesting experiment, but if they really wanted to improve the Club World Cup, they might think about the format. Right now, with the South American and European champions getting byes all the way to the semis, it’s basically a weekend. Everyone laughed at the Galaxy when they hosted an event they called “The World Series of Soccer”, but it wasn’t really that different from what is supposed to be the ultimate championship of the world for football clubs. Plus, Japanese teams have two chances in (One for Asia and one for just Japan) – what the hell is that?

Since it’s been pointed out to me that I sometimes bitch about things and don’t provide backup for it (all true), here’s an alternate format: the winners of the top level continental cups all make it (7), plus the winners of the second-tier continental cups of South America and Europe (2), who have to play an extra round for a single spot. That way, you have eight full spots, and you can do a simple 3-round single elimination tournament. It might not be fair to give Europe or SA a second team, but its not fair as it is now either, and Asia gets two teams, which is both unfair and makes no sense given their quality.
