Five Wins but No Points for Leeds United
By: Daryl | September 8th, 2007
Leeds United have made a perfect start to life in League One, with five wins out of five. That record should put them top of the table with 15 points, but unfortunately they’re bottom of the league with a big fat zero. Leeds started the season on -15 because of their cashflow situation (basically the cash wasn’t flowing.) The club were very nearly liquidated but just escaped when the League agreed to let Ken Bates do some dodgy dealing and take control of the club in “exceptional circumstances,” though the club had to start on -15. Despite my thinly veiled distaste for Bates’ business practices, maximum respect is due to this years Leeds United squad, who’ve pulled together in tough times to do the business on the field.
After beating Hartlepool 2-0 at home today, they’re now just two points behind second from bottom Walsall, and if Dennis Wise’s team keep the results coming then they won’t have to worry about relegation and could maybe even pull a Juventus and win promotion despite starting on negative points. And is it just me or is Wise finally starting to look more like a proper manager (see picture.)
But it’s not all good news at Elland Road. The Football Association have suspended Leeds’ full membership. They’ll still be able to enter the FA Cup (which could be a useful revenue source if they draw a big team) but won’t be able to vote on any FA decisons and, bizarrely, won’t get any complimentary FA Cup final tickets.
