Flag Waving Artur Boruc Investigated by Scottish Police
By: Bob | May 7th, 2007
As far as Old Firm contests go this one was supposed to devoid of much drama. Celtic had already clinched the Scottish Premier League title and Rangers were firmly ensconced in second place. Indeed, the game was rather routine with Rangers winning 2-0, but as is often the case when these two sides meet there is controversy afterward.
The person at the center of the attention is Celtic keeper Artur Boruc, who seemingly enjoys being the center of the attention. He is facing a police investigation after he ran around the pitch holding a Celtic ‘champions’ flag after the match. Apparently this classifies as a “provocative” action in the eyes of the Scottish police.
We are aware of the actions of Artur Boruc at the end of the Old Firm match. No criminal offence has occurred. However, this matter will be further addressed with Celtic Football Club and the SPL,’ said a police spokesman.
Translation: nothing is going to happen to Mr. Boruc but in the interest of sectarian safety we’ll kindly inform him that taunting Rangers’ fans is not in his best interest and that he should consider himself blessed that he didn’t start a riot.

Scottish authorities have always been really hard on Artur. First he was warned not to cross himself before games, because it was religious and sectarian. Now he can’t celebrate being the national champion? This is ridiculous - not that sectarianism isn’t a problem in Scottish football, but everyone who knows the game in Scotland knows that Boruc is a class act.

Kind of a bozo move on Boruc’s part but surely they must have bigger troubles in Glasgow than this.
