Football Gets Even More Metro With The First Pink Boots

By: Daryl | November 18th, 2008

Football boots used to be one colour: black. Everyone was happy and no one wore a sarong. But football today is a very different sport. It’s a lot more… metro.

Which brings us to the new football boot from the swoosh company (above). It’s called the Nike Mercurial Rosa, and it’s pink. Very pink.

It’s made out of the same stuff as all the other Nike Mercurials (which I personally think are ugly ugly boots that look like bowling shoes) but the swoosh has made the brave marketing move of offering them in the least manly colour on earth.

Never one to miss an advertising trick, they’ve released this pretty entertaining viral ad featuring footballer’s reactions to the pink boot, including Rio Ferdinand, Cesc Fabregas, Gabby Agbonlahor and Theo Walcott. My favourite reaction is either Martin O’Neill’s thoughtful shake of the head/nod of the head or the Jeff Stelling’s ironic “pink?” while wearing a shirt of the same colour.

The big question is: who will be the first player brave enough to wear these?

too late mustafa, already been done. i saw it at a game i was playing in once, this guy had a custom made nike/gucci boot!! it looked so weird and might i add, stupid too. it had the “G” all over it and it was shiny. the funny thing is that i was marking this fellow, it did distract me a lot, id look at the boots then look at him and try to figure out WHYYY?!!! but dont worry they’re not magical boots, not even golden boots will pass by me =)

oh and im sure C.Ronaldo is walking down some cat walk show parading his shiny pink boots.

Shane’s right. My boys in pink and black will probably have a player or two rocking them. My guess would be Miccoli. He’s certainly not one to hide from “fashion”. Any of you ever see the famous “Miccoli Eyebrows”? haha

instead of suspending the player for the next game because of a red card, they should just make them play in these pink shoes. i used to think that it was just a cultural thing when i thought that palemo looked like a bunch of sissies… but now nike is doing it? this isnt gonna go over well in the states, isnt nike trying to increase the game in the us?

The Palermo Primavera squad could pretty much crush any MLS team, coys. In fact, they’d beat them while wearing pink tutus just to rub it in. Who cares if it “goes over well” in the States. The day that corporations start trying to base footballing decisions to cater towards the US over the rest of the world is the day that tiddlywinks surpasses football in popularity.

“are people going to wear them?” CLASSIC.
as much as cronaldo loves his tan, i dont think he’d wear them. it’ll make him an easier target to get hacked.

Yeah, Martin O’Neill’s reaction is the best! You could write a whole thesis on it! First comes the shake betraying his true feelings, and then, Daryl, that’s not a thoughtfull shake of a head, but the involuntary complete-lack-of-understanding-of-modern-trends-but-nonetheless-compelled-to-feign-acceptance-because-of-social-pressure nod. Brilliant!
