Football Learnings of Europe for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan

Long before Borat introduced the world to the glorious nation of Kazakhstan there was a guy named Bob who spent some time living in a small village in the Central Asian country. That guy was me. I taught English in a local school there in the mid-1990s experiencing the joys of living in a place that gets to minus 40 in the winter and where eating a sheep’s eyeball is a great honor when you are a guest in someone’s home. I also had the chance to watch a Kazakh league football match or two. The effort was always there, the quality of play not so much.
Since that time the Kazakhstan national team has improved. The country moved into UEFA and has draws against Belgium and Azerbaijan to its name in Euro 2008 qualifying. Things are moving in the right direction and now it is time for Kazakhstan to take their football to another level.
Rakhat Aliyev, the powerful son-in-law of Kazakhstan’s president, said on Friday he was looking to buy a ’stable’ European soccer club and had been in talks with Belgium’s Excelsior Mouscron.
‘We’re looking for a stable European club on the basis of which we can build national football, so Kazakh players can play quick modern football in the top flight of Western Europe,’ Aliyev said in comments printed by his Kazakhstan Today news agency.

If his strategy looks familiar, it is because it is. Just take a look at what everyone’s favorite lunatic owner Vladimir Romanov has done in Scotland. He’s got half of Lithuania playing for Hearts.
By the way, Aliyev’s father-in-law, President Nursultan Nazarbayev, has managed to steal and pocket enough money from his country’s vast oil reserves that he probably could buy the entire English Premiership and still have money leftover to hire Roman Abramovich to clean his boots and to cook his sheep eyeballs.
