Forget The Title, Tottenham Wins The Race

By: chris | April 26th, 2008

Surely destined for Chelsea, Manchester United or Liverpool in recent times, the shock heard ’round the footballing world today came when Tottenham freakin’ Hotspur announced they have reached an agreement to sign Luka Modric from Dinamo Zagreb for the not-so-measly sum of £15.8m (reportedly). Just damn. So Tottenham signs perhaps the most touted young player in Europe and a guy likened as the next Johan Cruijff (I hear he wasn’t bad).

Does this mean the balance of power shifts in the Premiership? No. But the club closest to breaking into the Big Four, standings aside, just got a little bit closer with the mesmerizing creativity, numbing pitch intelligence and surprising goalscoring prowess of the guy who looks a tad like a mouse.

Tottenham fans will be going crazy over this signing, and with good reason. But you know who might be happiest of all? Dimitar Berbatov, who seemingly already had one foot out the door. For all the big money Chelsea, ManU, Real Madrid etc etc are ready to throw at him, Dimitar’s head must hit his pillow this evening with dreams of sublimely threaded balls from Luka, a goal in the making, simply waiting for his finishing touch. Can he hold off one more year for Champions League play? That’s the big question. Perhaps this means Dimitar’s exit is a foregone conclusion no longer.

Making this an even smarter move on Tottenham’s part is that this was all done before the European Championships arrive, when everybody and their mother is betting Luka will explode onto the global scene and dazzle the crowds from start to end. His price was never going to go down, but it certainly could’ve gone up. The time to buy was now.

Big day for Tottenham…Prem beware.

it'll be interesting to see how he does in England with defenders like Terry, Carragher, and Ferdinand standing on his shins.
  • DAMN!!!

I wanted Modric for Pompey and I had a bit of hope considering he is pals with Kranjcar.

honestly im a man united fan but wow what a potentially great squad tottenham have put together (isnt that always the case when berbatov's around)...and i kinda like spurs because ya know...they never really get in the way of winning anything unless you're chelsea. figuring this is what spurs might look like come next year

    ledley king

that's getting a little bit scary.
