Freddie Ljungberg is Coming to Seattle

By: Laurie | October 28th, 2008

So in my email today, I got an invite to the fan meet-up with Seattle Sounders FC’s new Designated Player. And who is that new Designated Player? None other than Swedish international Freddie Ljungberg.

Because Seattle truly needs more underwear models.

“We looked far and wide for a designated player who would represent the spirit of our team,” said Sounders FC majority owner Joe Roth. “In Freddie Ljungberg, we found it. A proven international star at Arsenal and captain of the Swedish national team, Freddie is the exciting, creative force we need and we are sure the Seattle fans are in for a great treat.”

“Freddie Ljungberg has been an impactful player in the Premier League and international play for the past 10 years,” said Sounders FC General Manager Adrian Hanauer. “His intelligence, his quickness, his bravery, his competitiveness, his experience, will all make Freddie a highly effective player in Major League Soccer.”

(”Impactful”? Argh. I’m citing Hanauer for abuse of the English language. But that’s irrelevant here.)

As a season ticket holder, color me underenthused. Ljungberg is good, sure — he captained Sweden in last summer’s Euros. But it almost feels like they were going through the Beckham checklist:

Played in the EPL? Check.
International? Check.
At the end of his European career? Check
Sexy? Underwear model? Gay icon? Check. Check. Check.

Sign the man!!

Sigh.

Let’s hope it works out better for Seattle.

(At least he’s got the local beverage right.)

never been the kind of player you can build a team around. At his best he added an important dimension to a dominant arsenal team but I dont think his style of play is really fitted for MLS and its inferior team play.

Old apple, you sum up my feelings exactly. I feel that he was chosen for some other reason, i.e. to increase the Butts in Seats/kit sales factor, as if he were Beckham. But he’s not Beckham!

Ah, but one will be able to get in to the games to see a comparable physique with significantly less fuss. ;-)

Juliet, I remember reading an article a year or so ago that described Ljungberg as “the man who looks like Beckham thinks he looks.” Harsh, but…

So you’re right. There is that.

How about using the DP spot for a young South American talent who maybe isn’t going to get signed by a big European club, but he’s plenty good for the MLS? That’s who you want to build your club around. Sure, you can’t market the guy like ol’ Freddie here (he’ll keep fans interested for about a month), but at least you have a chance of winning, which is much more effective at putting butts in seats for the long run.

i’m not sure if this is true but… i heard a rumour that freddy and sol campbell were both banished from arsenal for getting a bit too “close”. can anyone confirm this for me?

The DP rule was initiated to try and increase the level of talent, appeal, and development of the league. Instead, the teams are using it to turn the league into a mini-NASL. Sad.
