German Keeper Robert Enke Passes Away, 32.

Tragic news coming through this evening: German national team and Hannover 96 keeper Robert Enke has died through what most outfits are calling an apparent suicide by train.

“The victim is apparently national team goalkeeper Robert Enke from Hannover 96,” a media officer for the Niedersachsen police told Reuters. “The first police indications are that it was a suicide.”

The German FA (DFB) also issued a statement which read: “The German team has learned of the death of Robert Enke with great shock. National team coach Joachim Loew and manager Oliver Bierhoff said ‘we are all shocked, we are speechless’.”

An incredible loss for the sport and one which, if reports are true, has at least removed all the pain from Robert’s life.

Rest in peace, Robert.

  Possible suicide, which is ironic (although deeply saddening as well) considering ESPN’s Bundeslige correspondent Ule wrote a piece of depression in footballers involved in the Bundesliga just last week.

  It’s nice that Enkes pain is gone, but the train engineer has got a few years of therapy he’ll have to work through. Selfish way to commit suicide, to say the least (if it was suicide).

  I believe that this is a very irresponsible comment on a very tragic story. This blog has a very wide readership and I’m sure many of its readers deal with depression much like Mr. Enke must have. To post a comment such as this only encourages others to take the same path to alleviate their own pain. I’m sure this was not your intent but a comment on the prevalence of depression and an encouragement to those that suffer from it to get help would have been infinitely more appropriate.

  I will never really understand suicide. But if he felt he no longer wanted to live; it is ultimately his decision.

  Witnessed a suicide in the Paris metro many years ago…I was sick and horrified. Police questioned everyone – what could we say? When they finally let us go – we went up to street level and there was a bridal party walking down the street. Irony?
