German Magazine Shows Stinkefinger to English Football Terms
By: Bob | October 11th, 2006
With the English language increasingly infiltrating countries around the world, a German magazine has decided it is time to draw the line with football terms. The Deutsche Sprachwelt magazine has come up with a list of 11 English football phrases that Germans use as part of their lexicon that should be replaced by German terms this very instance.
Instead of using the easy and poetic “der Teamspirit,” for example, the magazine recommends the gutturally satisfying and almost possible to pronounce “Mannschaftsgeist”. In place of “der Shootout,” one should say “das Elfmeterschiessen,” which is much more descriptive term for the 11 metre shooting that takes place during a shootout. One term that needs no changing is the always popular stinkefinger.
As of this moment, there is no movement to rid English of German terms like “Ollie Kahn,” which is a synonym for “he who gives nightmares to people at night”.
