Goals Good, Flipping Off The Boss Bad
By: Daryl | August 5th, 2007
Jay Bothroyd’s ill-advised goal celebration may have jeopardised his career at Wolverhampton Wanderers. The big striker has lost his spot in the Wolves first team after the Championship challengers brought in Freddy Eastwood and Stephen Elliot this summer, but came off the bench in a pre-season friendly yesterday to score a nice enough goal against Reading (video below.)
Unfortunately Bothroyd didn’t think the goal proved enough of a point to manager Mick McCarthy, so he flipped his boss the V-sign as well. Not the friendly “victory” sign, or the hippytastic “peace” sign, but the bad V-sign that’s the English equivalent of an American middle finger.
Understandably unimpressed, McCarthy cut Bothroyd’s first team outing short by immediately substituting him. McCarthy explained it like this. “He made one gesture, so I made another — I took him off.”
You can see Bothroyd’s goal below, but unfortunately the camera doesn’t catch up with him until after he’s given McCarthy the two finger salute.

This is how Serie A and the Prem are different. Jay Bothroyd flips off the man in charge and gets taken off. David Trezeguet flips off the owners box and gets a raise.
