Gonzalo Higuain: The Player that Everyone Wants
By: Bob | November 16th, 2006
A few weeks back when I wrote about the Gonzalo Higuain, I could hardly have predicted the number of headlines he would end up creating. The French-born, Argentine-raised River Plate striker is coveted by just about everyone and the drama behind the legend-to-be is better than a South American soap opera.
One the international level, Higuain was called up for France’s friendly against Greece Wednesday but politely told the French, merci, but no gracias. Does this mean that he will eventually suit up for Argentina? That remains to be seen, but I love France coach Raymond Domenech’s suggestion for what he should do when France and Argentina meet on February 7. “He could play a half for each side!” said Domenech, who apparently is willing to forgive Higuain for the rejection because the kid could still end up being a pretty damn good for Les Bleus some day.
On the club level, there has also been much speculation about where Gonzalo Higuain will play next. There has been talk of Chelsea, talk of a French Ligue 1 team and today there is talk that he will join the Brazilian wunderkind Marcelo and sign a long-term deal with Real Madrid. While the reports indicate that the deal with the Spanish giants is done, nothing about Higuain ever appears to be a done deal so, again, we’ll have to wait and see.
Waiting and seeing is the common theme here. A player this young could eventually live up to the hype or he could turn out to be a major disappointment; only time will tell. For now, Higuain has a football world that is always searching for the next great thing at his mercy.
