Great Example of That Trick Penalty Thingy With No Name
By: Daryl | May 29th, 2008This is a nice little penalty manoeuvre from Brazil, scored by two América players against Ideal.
From the spot, Euller flicks the ball forward to Douglas, who appears from off camera to roll the ball home.
Nicely done. It’s certainly better than the Robert Pires/Thierry Henry disaster in 2005. More successful attempts from Rik Coppens and later Johan Cruyff can be seen here. But the Euller and Douglas combo may be the best yet. It’s got flair and precision.
Does anyone know if this type of penalty has a name? And if not, are there any suggestions?

Is that language Portuguese? It sounds very different from Portugal Portuguese.

@ Laurie
Yep, that would be Brazilian Portuguese. The accent is very different. I’m very fluent in Portuguese after living in Brazil when I was little but I have a very hard time understanding Portuguese from Portugal when I hear it.

Yeah, I speak passable French and a teensy bit of Spanish, and when I listen to this my ear keeps trying to say, “There’s a word I know!” But when I listen to Portugal Portuguese, I keep thinking I’m listening to Russian. No joke.

I’ve always thought of it as “the Cruyff Penalty” – but I do love him.

I wonder if it counts as a missed penalty for Euller, since he doesn’t score?
