Benjamin Huggel’s Strike for FC Basel is The Guardian Voters Goal of the Season

Yesterday we posted 101GG’s 101 Greatest Goals of the season. Today we’re posting the European goal of the season, as voted for by Guardian readers.

The goal was scored by Benjamin Huggel for FC Basel vs FC Zurich in October 2009. Obviously the finish is a bit good, but I suspect the build up – intelligent short passing at the top of the box, complete with a couple of tricks – is what really sealed the deal. Ollie at Who Ate All the Pies? found a good way to describe it: “like some Total Football wet dream.”

Guardian readers were certainly enthusiastic. The goal received 84.88% of the vote, the sort of percentage politicians dream about. Some absolute stunners shared the remaining 15.12%, so I’d <a href="“>encourage you to go take a look and click through to see them on YouTube.

  • Look at the comments and tell me 85% isn't strange.
  • 85%...That's a strangely high percentage. Ismael Bangoura's goal deserves more than 0.1% of the votes!
