Handball: Finger Size Matters in Football

By: Bob | September 28th, 2006

big_rock_hands.jpgFor a long time now, you’ve probably wondered why you never made it to the big time in football. Why someone like Wayne Rooney was able to go on to stardom, while you are lucky to see playing time in your Sunday league games. It couldn’t be that Mr. Rooney worked harder than you or had more desire. No, it was something other than that – namely the size of your ring finger.

A recent study has shown that size really does matter. In this case, it examines the size of a woman’s ring finger in proportion to her index finger. When the ring finger is significantly longer, female athletes tend to run faster. Lest you think this scientific discovery just applies to the fairer sex, it turns out that previous studies have shown that there is also a link between the size of the ring finger and the quality of male footballers.

As if this genetic mountain wasn’t a high enough obstacle to overcome, you’ll recall that football talent has also been linked to the month in which a player is born. So if you’re like us and have an average sized ring finger and were born in the summer, you never had a chance to be a star. That is something almost reassuring about this.
